Earl of Birkenhead
Earl of Birkenhead was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom , named after the town of Birkenhead .
Award and subordinate titles
The title was awarded on November 28, 1922 to the well-known politician and lawyer Frederick Edwin Smith, 1st Viscount Birkenhead . Among other things, he had been Lord Chancellor in the Lloyd George government .
Along with the earliest dignity, he was given the subordinate title Viscount Furneaux , of Charlton in the County of Northampton . He was already Baronet , of Birkenhead in the County of Chester on January 24, 1918 , Baron Birkenhead , of Birkenhead in the County of Chester on February 3, 1919 , and Viscount Birkenhead , of Birkenhead in the on June 15, 1921 County of Chester. The eldest son of the respective earl carried the courtesy title Viscount Furneaux as the title heir ( heir apparent ) .
The titles mentioned expired on the childless death of his grandson, the 3rd Earl, on February 16, 1985.
