Earl of Eldon
Earl of Eldon , in the County Palatine of Durham , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .
Award
The title was awarded on July 7, 1821 to the lawyer and politician John Scott, 1st Baron Eldon , who held the office of Lord Chancellor from 1801 to 1806 and from 1807 to 1827 .
Subordinate title
Along with the earldom the title was a Viscount Encombe , of Encombe in the County of Dorset, loaned, is also part of the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It is used as a courtesy title by the title heir ( heir apparent ) .
On July 18, 1799, John Scott had been awarded the title of Baron Eldon , of Eldon in the County Palatine of Durham. This title belongs to the Peerage of Great Britain .
William Scott, 1st Baron Stowell , was the elder brother of the first Earl of Eldon.
