Patrick Hume, 1st Earl of Marchmont, 1st Lord Polwarth

Lord Polwarth , of Polwarth in the County of Berwick , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .

Award

The title was created on December 26, 1690 for Sir Patrick Hume, 2nd Baronet . In the absence of male offspring, the title can also be passed on to female offspring. He had already inherited the title of Baronet , of Polwarth, from his father in 1648 , which he had been awarded on December 19, 1637 in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia. On May 23, 1697 he was also awarded the titles of Earl of Marchmont , Viscount of Blasonberrie and Lord Polwarth , of Polwarth, Redbraes and Greenlaw.

When the 3rd Earl died in 1794 with no male offspring, his titles fell into a dormant state as no one effectively claimed them. In July 1835 the Committee for Privileges and Conduct of the House of Lords confirmed the title of Lord Polwarth for Hugh Hepburne-Scott as 6th Lord, and retroactively to his late mother and cousin as de iure 5th and 4th Lady.

Today's title holder is Andrew Hepburne-Scott as the 11th Lord.

The Lords Polwarth family seat was Marchmont House near Greenlaw in Berwickshire until 1913 .
