Earl of Minto , of Minto in the County of Roxburgh , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

The Earls family home is Minto House near Hawick in Roxburghshire , Scotland .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was created on February 24, 1813 for Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, 1st Baron Minto . He was a well-known politician, diplomat and colonial official. From 1807 to 1813 he was Governor General and Viceroy of India .

Simultaneously with the earldom him were also in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, the subsidiary title Viscount Melgund , of Melgund in the County of Forfar awarded. As early as October 20, 1797, he was raised to Baron Minto , of Minto in the County of Roxburgh, in the Peerage of Great Britain . In addition, he had inherited the title of Baronet , of Minto in the County of Roxburgh, from his father as early as 1777 , which was given to his great-grandfather on April 19, 1700 in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia .

The three titles are used to this day as subordinate titles by the respective earl.
