The earthDATAsafe is an underground high-security data center in the Austrian Kapfenberg that of the Kapsch BusinessCom AG is operated (KBC). It is used for the secure storage of sensitive company data so that it can still be accessed in an emergency (for example in the event of a local server failure). Due to the ideal geographical position (up to 250 m below ground) and numerous protective measures, one can speak of a more than highly available data security. The data center is SunTone-certified ( ITIL- compliant) and specializes in archiving and secure system operation.

history

Today's earthDATAsafe main building is located directly above an air raid shelter complex of the Böhler-Edelstahl company built between 1943 and 1944 under the code name "SYENIT" . At the time of the World War, the Böhler company was the largest steel producer in what was then Ostmark and manufactured numerous components for combat aircraft, tanks and the like. It was therefore sometimes the target of attack by the allied bomber units. In order to protect itself from these attacks, the Böhler company built a bunker complex in order to be able to relocate not only the protection of the employees but also the entire production there. But that never happened. The tunnel system consisted of four working and four transport tunnels with a total length of 1150 meters and a floor area of 4650 m². EarthDATAsafe has been based there since 2003 .

The earthDATAsafe was originally set up by DaimlerChrysler Computing Services GmbH (DCCS) and started in 2003. After 11 months of construction, the earthDATAsafe finally started normal operation in November 2003. On July 1, 2008, the operation of earthDATASafe was taken over by KapschBusinessCom AG.

architecture

The architecture of the earthDATAsafe complex is based on this air raid shelter at the time. The entire bunker was equipped by VA-Siemens with security systems worth around € 500,000 and now offers approx. 370 m² of floor space for storage servers that store the backups. This parking space can be expanded to around 4000 m² due to the prevailing bunker architecture.

In addition to the numerous video cameras, the safety features include an uninterruptible power supply that not only supplies the IT systems but also the ventilation, fed by a 315 kW emergency diesel generator with a 7000 liter underground tank and an 800 kW emergency diesel generator with an 11,000 liter tank , Smoke extraction duct system, early fire smoke detection with full detection, which can locate a possible cable fire based on particle detection three hours before the actual fire and a fire alarm system with nitrogen extinguishing system .
