Video tips for everyday life

Simon and Martina's videos are there to give the audience (mainly from foreign countries) an insight into what they would otherwise not get from travel guides and authorities. Eatyourkimchi provides “a local insight into Korean culture that you won't find in your average travel guide,” says Elysabeth Hahm of the Yonhap News Agency . The videos are humorous and attract an audience that would rather “watch” than read. The video blog contains some repetitive topics such as the Korean language, Korean food, and Korean music. Individual videos show how a South Korean washing machine works, how to order food, table bells in South Korean restaurants and how to pay bills. The series shows z. B. Preparation aids for Bulgogi, Samgyeopsal and Galbi. The site also contains several weekly series, such as Kpop Music Mondays (eng. K-pop music montage), Wonderful Treasure Find - short WTF - (eng. Discovery of a wonderful treasure), and Too Long; Didn't Read — TL for short; DR— (eng. Too long; I haven't read).

background

Simon and Martina Stawski

The Stawskis are originally from Canada and moved to South Korea in 2008. When they arrived on May 31, 2008, there had been some worrying inconsistencies between North and South Korea and the couple started their first video at the airport to reassure their parents that they were okay. The blog quickly grew into an “all about Korea” channel. Eat Your Kimchi isn't just interesting because of its story. It's also part of bigger trends in South Korea. There were no blogs in South Korea before 2002, but the number of bloggers has been increasing every year since then, and so are foreign bloggers in South Korea. In 2008, YouTube hit the South Korean market and changed the lives of South Korean citizens, including the Stawskis. Even in 2011, the format of their video blogs is still special. “Hardly anyone makes videos specifically about Korea,” says Martina Stawski.

Audience and reception

According to the Korean Herald newspaper, Eatyourkimchi made it onto the list of 21 “Most Useful Websites” and was voted the best migrant blog in South Korea on Hiexpat.com. The two bloggers have since appeared on a number of South Korean television shows including Heart to Heart, Quilt Your Korean Map, Star King and Running Man. Sometimes they are recognized by people on the street and photographed. Martina Stawski reports that Eatyourkimchi is known around the world, but the audience is focused on Australia, Canada, South Korea and the United States. Eatyourkimchi's videos are widely distributed online through iTunes, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and YouTube. The pair's channel has so far reached more than 695,000 subscribers and the videos enjoy more than 190 million views. Your website, which also contains videos, has more than 750,000 hits per month from more than 100,000 users.
