The Echo Network Service is a simple service in the Internet protocol family . The task of the service is to send all received data back to the client unchanged . It is therefore suitable for testing and troubleshooting during the development of client programs.

The echo service is TCP and - UDP - Port 7 reserved. The echo protocol is specified in RFC 862 .

In Unix systems, the echo service - just like the other simple network services ( daytime , discard, etc.) - is usually implemented directly in inetd . In Windows systems, these network services are located in the optional Windows component Simple TCP / IP services .
