Corner (giant)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Corner is the name of a giant who appears as an opponent of Dietrich von Bern in German heroism .

Meaning of the name

The name corner can possibly be traced back to the Old High German word egis or the Old Norse word œgr , which means something like terrible . Corner would then be called the "Schrecker" or the "Terrible". However, corner could also refer to the "sword's edge". Since O. Freiberg it has been assumed that this name and the figure from the old weapon name Eckesachs was only developed later. In order to explain the name of Dietrich's sword, which is documented literarily as early as the 12th century, a former owner named Ecke was invented.

The role of Eckes in the legend

Corner was u. a. instigated by three royal virgins with a marriage vow to kill Dietrich von Bern . The duel between Ecke and Dietrich von Bern is decided in Dietrich's favor because, in the heat of the battle, Dietrich's horse gets too close and the latter kills the giant with a hoof kick. Eck owned the famous Eckesach sword and loses it to Dietrich von Bern in this fight.
