Ed van der Elsken (1988)

Ed van der Elsken (born March 10, 1925 in Amsterdam , † December 28, 1990 in Edam ) was a Dutch photographer and filmmaker who grew up in the Amsterdam residential district of Betondorp . He made a name for himself as a street photographer , travel photographer - he traveled to Japan more than a dozen times - and chronicler of the hippie movement.

Life

Throughout his life he used the city and the street as his stage and photographed the life going on there.

In 1937 he began training as a sculptor , which he broke off. After the Second World War, he then turned to photography. He was particularly interested in the photographer Weegee and his book Naked City .

In 1950 he went to Paris, where he initially worked as a photo lab technician for the Magnum Photos agency . During this time, the book Love in St.-Germain-des-Prés , which was to appear in 1956, was written. The publication of the illustrated book brought immediate international fame.

From the 1970s he was also successful as a filmmaker. For his film Die Verliebte Kamera he was awarded the State Prize of the Netherlands for Film in 1971 . His last film Bye (1990) is about his cancer and the fatal end.

In 2017 the Stedelijk Museum is showing a large retrospective exhibition entitled “De Verliefde Camera”, which can be seen in Paris and Madrid in addition to Amsterdam .
