Ederer thousands

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ederer-Thousand refers to the amount that Austrians should save by joining the EU in 1995 . According to the then SPÖ- EU State Secretary Brigitte Ederer in 1994, the cost of living in Austria would fall so much that an average family of four could live cheaper by 1,000 schillings per year.

However, since many of the effects of EU accession could not be read directly from lower consumer prices, the Ederer thousand became synonymous with the disappointed expectations of many citizens who enthusiastically voted "Yes" in the referendum on EU accession.

Today it is no longer entirely clear when the Ederer Thousand was first discussed and whether it influenced the outcome of the referendum on Austria's accession to the EU.

In 2004, almost ten years after joining, the Oesterreichische Nationalbank presented a study according to which every Austrian benefited in the range of 700 to 5,000 euros per year. These calculations are based on comparisons of the economic data with Switzerland , which had spoken out against joining the EU. Converted to the month and in schilling amounts, this results in a profit of 800 to 5500 schillings. In this amount, however, not only the direct savings on expenditure, but also other factors such as increased gross domestic product , increased standard of living etc. are included.
