The Edificio Alas (German: Alas building) is a residential and office building in the San Nicolás district of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires .

description

The Alas building is 141 meters high and has 41 floors. The construction time was four years. From completion in 1950 to 1996, it was the tallest building in Buenos Aires until it was surpassed by the Torre Le Parc . It is together with neighboring buildings on Avenida Leandro N. Alem , e.g. B. the Edificio Comega , an important part of the cityscape of Buenos Aires. In recent years it has been overshadowed by the construction of numerous high-rise buildings in the Puerto Madero district . On the list of tallest buildings in the country, it is number 20 (as of 2009).

The construction was commissioned by the former President Juan Perón . He also ordered the construction of a bunker in the building in the event of a war or a coup. However, he did not use this bunker during the bombing of the Plaza de Mayo on June 16, 1955, or during the so-called Liberation Revolution (Revolución Libertadora) three months later.
