Eduard-Kahl-Bad
The Eduard-Kahl-Bad is an indoor swimming pool in Metzingen , which is operated by the Stadtwerke Metzingen. The building was built according to a design by the architects Dolmetsch + Haug in 1972–74 and was awarded the Ruhrgas Architecture Prize in 1975 .
description
The Metzingen indoor swimming pool is centrally located on Konrad-Adenauer-Platz, in the immediate vicinity of the old gym, the Sieben-Keltern-Schule and the town hall. The building complex consists of an indoor swimming pool and a sports hall; due to the closely adjoining development and traffic routing, an outdoor area was not assigned. The building is handicapped accessible, so that access to the changing rooms, showers and the swimming pool is not a problem for wheelchair users, and has two pools. The larger (25.0 × 12.5 m) is known as the swimming pool, the smaller (12.5 × 8.0 m) as the teaching pool.
The complex is characterized by its exposed concrete look and daylight, from the north by skylights and from the east and west by side lights. Low windows to the south create a line of sight to the outside area; sun protection is not necessary. The supporting structure of the roof consists of a space framework, a so-called Mero construction. The round tubular steel rods are connected to one another via spherical nodes. The bars are coated with red paint.
The structure was planned from July 1970 to July 1971, built from April 1972 to August 1974 and then put into operation in autumn 1974. In 1975 it was proposed for the Ruhrgas Architecture Prize; a total of 151 architects or architectural associations took part in the competition that year. After the decision in favor of the "indoor swimming pool and sports hall" by the architects' office Dolmetsch + Haug, the chairman of the jury, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Joedicke , gave a laudation in the Metzingen town hall, in which he gave the following assessment:
“The system can be seen as an exemplary solution for building municipal infrastructure. An assembly group that is equally convincing in terms of function, economy and design was found for the basically everyday task. The system makes an important contribution to the urban improvement in the center of the city of Metzingen. "
The indoor pool was named in 1985 after the mayor Eduard-Kahl-Bad, who was in office at the time of construction. After decades of intensive use, maintenance measures are urgently required. However, the local council and city administration of Metzingen agreed to first discuss the future of the Metzingen baths in principle, which was done in 2018 in detail. So far, the outdoor pool and the indoor pool have been located at two different locations. In May, the local council decided in favor of a new combination pool to be built outside the city center.
Clause 5 of the municipal council resolution "Location decision baths" of May 17, 2018 reads:
"5. The indoor pool building should be preserved as far as possible. The administration is commissioned to develop and examine various options for further use of the indoor swimming pool building, taking into account the indoor swimming pool gym. The possibility of an - at least partially - continued use for school swimming and for swimming clubs should also be examined. The administration is requested to include in the test order about the various possibilities of further use of the indoor pool as a teaching pool for school swimming and for the clubs also the use combination with a physiotherapeutic pool offer and to work out a consultation template for the municipal council. "
This decision was confirmed by a referendum in November 2018. How the building from the 1970s will continue to be used is still unclear.
