Eduard Schmidt puddling and rolling mills

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Eduard Schmidt company was one of the oldest iron-producing plants in the Sauerland and became part of the Westfälische Union AG in 1873 .

history

In 1809 a needle grinding and scrubbing mill was built in Nachrodt , which used the water power of the Lenne . Johann Heinrich Schmidt from Iserlohn bought the mill in 1817 and was one of the first in the country to start rolling in 1822. The work then passed to the owner's son, Eduard Schmidt . This introduced the puddling process from England . The main products were iron bars, straps, wheel tires and sheet iron from which stove pipes, boilers, bathtubs and other items were made.

After the death of Eduard Schmidt in 1842, the family continued to run the Nachrodter plant. Production, and especially tinplate , was increasingly expanded. In 1871 there were 22 puddle ovens in operation and around 600 workers were employed. In 1872, the then owner, Ferdinand Flinsch , the second husband of Eduard Schmidt's daughter , sold the company to a Berlin businessman. In the same year he sold it to the Berlin banker Alexander Seelig , who brought it in in 1873 when the Westphalian Union was founded .
