Edward Jakobowski (born April 17, 1856 in London ; † April 29, 1929 there ) was an English composer of Polish-Austrian origin.

Jakobowski grew up in Vienna and attended the conservatory there. After a two-year stay in Paris, he came to London in 1883, where his comic opera Dick was premiered at the Globe Theater the following year . 1885 his most successful work, the comic opera Erminie, appeared . It had 154 performances, was reinstated at the Comedy Theater in 1886 , and played in opera houses across the UK for years. The US performance at Rudolf Aronson's New York Casino with Pauline Hall in the title role, Harry Pepper , Carl Irving , Marion Manola , Agnes Folsom , Rose Beaudet , William S. Daboll and Francis Wilson was also a sensational success .

Jakobowski's other operas were Mynheer Jan (1887), Paola (1889), A Venetian Singer (1893), The Queen of Brilliants (1894), The Devil's Deputy (1894) and Milord Sir Smith (1898). Although they were well received by the audience, they were financial failures, so that Jakobowski became impoverished and in 1902 was declared bankrupt.

When Jakobowski died in a hospital in 1929, he and his works were largely forgotten. 1952 Erminie was performed in a version edited by Gordon MacRae and Nell Tangeman in the Railroad Hour on NBC . In 1957, Nathaniel Shilkret recorded two excerpts from Erminie with the Symphonic Pops Orchestra for the LP Operetta Favorites .
