The Edwards Wieselmaki ( Lepilemur edwardsi ) is an on Madagascar living primate species from the group of lemurs within the lemurs .
features
Edwards weasel lemurs are among the larger representatives of the weasel lemurs. They reach a head body length of 24 to 29 centimeters, to which a 26 to 30 centimeter long tail comes. The weight is 1.0 to 1.2 kilograms. Their fur is gray-brown on the back, with the shoulders, upper arms and thighs being significantly brown. The belly is light gray with whitish spots. The long tail ends in a white tip. The round head is colored gray, the eyes are large, the ears protrude relatively far out of the fur.
distribution and habitat
Edwards' weasel lemurs inhabit dry deciduous forests in northwestern Madagascar, their range is between the Mahajamba and Betseboke rivers. They occur up to 450 meters above sea level.
Way of life
Edwards weasel lemurs, like all weasel lemurs, are nocturnal tree dwellers. In the trees they move vertically climbing and jumping. During the day they usually sleep in tree hollows, most of them alone, but sometimes you can find up to four animals together. At dusk they go in search of food, but they are always alone on the move. Their diet consists of leaves, fruits, seeds and flowers.
A male and a female share a common territory of around 1 hectare in size. Adjacent territories overlap, and especially in the dry season, when there is little food, you can see several animals eating together on one tree.
Danger
Edwards weasel lemurs are primarily endangered by the destruction of their habitat, and hunting is an additional factor. The IUCN lists the species as "endangered" ( vulnerable ).
