The Egon Schiele Museum in Tulln on the Danube is a Lower Austrian museum for fine arts , which is dedicated to the painter Egon Schiele , who was born in Tulln .

Emergence

The municipality of Tulln began to plan its own Egon Schiele Museum in Tulln in 1980 and for this purpose acquired the district prison, which was built in 1898 and in need of renovation. The International Egon Schiele Society became the sponsor of the museum idea.

From 1985 to 1990 the old prison building of the Tulln District Court was renovated and converted into a museum. An originally existing prison cell was then modeled on the cell of the Neulengbach prison in which Egon Schiele had to spend three weeks in 1912. The museum opened on June 12, 1990, on the artist's 100th birthday.

In 2011 the Egon Schiele Museum was taken over by the NÖ Museum BetriebsgesmbH. After renovation and redesigning measures, the permanent exhibition was reopened over the summer months in April 2011 under the title "Egon Schiele: The Beginnings of the Artist". The focus of the exhibition is Schiele's early work. Furthermore, the relationship with his hometown Tulln and the province of Lower Austria as well as his passion for toy trains are discussed.

Exhibitions

Since 2011, the artistic focus of the museum has been the epoch from the birth to the founding of its own group of artists, the “Neukunstgruppe” in 1909. With a focus on the artist's beginnings, not only is a gap in the Austrian museum presentation closed, it is it has become possible to furnish the exhibition exclusively with originals. The works come from the collections of the municipality of Tulln and the Museum Niederösterreich as well as another private collection. Originally, mainly works from the collection of Werner Gradisch, Schiele's great-nephew, were exhibited in the museum; However, these were withdrawn by Gradisch in 2015 after a dispute with the municipality of Tulln about a chimney finding.

The ground floor and the souvenir area welcome guests with a living room atmosphere. A separate treasure trove with original works is devoted to different chapters from the artist's life every year. Conversations between Texan Alessandra Comini and Egon Schiele's family and friends from the 1960s form the basis for the design of the first floor of the museum. Using augmented reality , six stations from his work are literally brought to life before the eyes of the visitors accompanied by original voices. The atelier on the upper floor of the building has been designed to be brighter and more open and is available to visitors for creative activities during events.

Branch office

Schiele's birth room and an adjoining room were rented and furnished in Tulln train station. The room was furnished with furniture that corresponded to the taste of the time, as no photographs of the premises have been preserved. The curtains in the room were modeled on those in a photo of Leopold Czihaczek's apartment, who was Schiele's uncle and guardian. The original tiled stove, in which Schiele's father burned his shares in a flurry of mental confusion, is exhibited. Two double beds with their bedside tables, a washstand and photos of the Schiele family complete the furnishings.

The second room is dedicated to those people from Schiele's family who had something to do with the railroad. It also contains a railway with replica trains from around 1890.
