It is. The complex has been designated a National Historic Site since 1955 as one of the oldest existing buildings in Ottawa , and the building itself has been a listed building since 1986.
Location and description
The former Geological Survey of Canada building is on the corner of Sussex Drive and George Street near Byward Market in Lowertown .
The three-story building is made of coarse limestone and has classicist and Italian elements. It has an L-shaped floor plan and thus has an inner courtyard.
history
Construction of the wing on Sussex Drive began in 1863. At first it served as a hotel. Shortly afterwards it was used as a barracks for a few years. After a second time as a hotel (1874–1879) it became federal property and was rebuilt in 1881 to serve as a location for the eponymous Geological and Natural History Survey of Canada . This use lasted until 1911.
Today the former building of the Geological Survey of Canada is still federally owned. It is managed by the National Capital Commission and houses, among other things, a restaurant and a nightclub on the ground floor and basement.
