Ei-Kyū ( Japanese 瑛 九 , also signed Q Ei , real name Sugita Hideo ( 杉 田 秀 夫 ); born April 28, 1911 in Miyazaki ; died March 10, 1960 in Tokyo ) was a Japanese painter, graphic artist and photographer during the Shōwa time .

life and work

Ei-Kyū began studying Western painting at the Nihon Bijutsu Gakkō ( 日本 美術 学校 ) in 1925 . In the following years he commuted between Miyazaki and Tōkyo, working actively as a critic for magazines such as "Atelier" or "Mizue".

From 1930 Ei-Kyū attended the Oriental Photo School. In 1936 he became a member of the group "Western Painting of the New Age" ( 新 時代 洋 画展 , Shinjidai yōgaten ). In the same year the photograms "Reasons for Sleep" were created. He cultivated changeable relationship with the "Association of Free Artists" ( 自由 美術 家 協会 , Jiyū bijutsuka kyōkai ).

In 1951 Ei-Kyū participated in the establishment of the "Association of Democratic Artists" ( デ モ ク ラ ー ト 美術 家 協会 , Demokurāto bijutsuka kyōkai ). First exhibition. The photo design “Dreams of Photographic Images” is created. During that time he began to work with etchings.

In 1960 Ei-Kyū died in Tōkyō.
