The Yew on household furniture is a more than 800 year old yew . It is located on Haus Rath in the Elfrath district of Krefeld , is a protected natural monument and is considered the oldest tree in the Krefeld city area.

Status

The trunk has a circumference of 4.5 m. The core of the trunk is hollow and the trunk itself is split in several places. To maintain the stability of the yew tree, anchors have been used for several decades to hold the individual parts of the trunk together.

maintenance

The green spaces department of the city of Krefeld takes care of the tree.

Age

There are quite different statements about the age of the yew tree. According to a sign on site, the yew tree is said to be 950 years old. Estimates suggest that the tree could even be up to 1000 years old. Since the core of the tree no longer exists, an exact dating using annual rings is not clearly possible. In the specialist literature, ages are given between 450 and 850 years. However, it is considered likely that the tree is at least 800 years old.

Location

The yew tree is located on an artificially raised defensive hill ( moth ). The first fortified structures on this hill could be dated around 1200. However, it is believed that the hill itself was created up to 200 years earlier. House Rath, hill, moat and the meadows in front of it are private property, so the tree cannot be easily viewed.

Legend

According to tradition, the yew tree was created through a feud with the lords of the nearby Linn Castle : Ulrich von Linn is said to have shot an arrow made of yew wood with his bow in the direction of Haus Rath, which got stuck in the castle hill, drove it out and grew into today's tree.

Trivia

The street Zur Eibe in the new housing estate in the immediate vicinity is dedicated to the yew tree on Haus Rath.
