Federal establishment census

The Business Census (BZ) is a Swiss survey of all businesses and companies in the secondary and tertiary sector , which by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) of Switzerland is carried out with the support of regional statistical offices. Its objective is the complete recording of all economic production units from an economic, social and spatial point of view. The BZ updates the Business and Business Register (BUR) and serves as a reference for a number of statistics.

Type of survey

The BZ is a full census . Their data is collected using paper questionnaires, online questionnaires (eSurvey) and profiling (separate surveys of large administrative units and companies). Participation in the survey is compulsory.

Acquisition characteristics

The BZ is a survey of workplaces and companies in the secondary and tertiary sector.

The location (address), economic activity, number of employees according to degree of employment, gender and nationality at the municipality level (and at the hectare level for geocoded data) are recorded.

The first census took place in 1905. Since then, it has been carried out three times a decade (that is, in the years that end with 1, 5 and 8). The reference date for the current calendar year is the last working day in September.
