action

The anonymous first-person narrator, a meticulous, intimidated employee who wants to please his superior, strolls through the city center after work. He examines the displays in a shop window and enters the associated shop. The seller pushes it deeper into the junk shop and stops in front of a stand that is filled with small packages. In every package, a dream is offered for sale. The shop must be darkened for the demonstration. The narrator looks at a couple of dreams and wants to buy the one in which Anna is threatened by a large black bird. Anna broke up with the narrator some time ago in real life.

In the shop, dreams are paid for with time, not with money. The narrator has no time and has the package with the bird's dream put back for him.

When the narrator finally wants to buy the dream package after days of hesitation, the junk shop no longer exists. The narrator falls ill and has to stay in bed for a few weeks. When he can get up again, his manager fires him. Now he has a lot of time.

reception

Schneider criticizes the parabolic shape and points to the “criticism of capitalism”. Ingeborg Bachmann also reprimands Hollywood for deceiving the viewer for a piece of his life.

It could be that Ingeborg Bachmann considered dreams to be noteworthy when she wrote in her poem “Toter Hafen”: “The gold is washed from dreams”.
