Inhalable fraction

Convention values for respirable fraction, thoracic fraction and respirable fraction as a function of the aerodynamic diameter according to DIN EN 481

As inhalable fraction ( inhalable fraction ) is, among others, in the standards EN 481, ISO 7708, EN ISO 10882-1 and EN 14031 the mass fraction of particulate matter referred or airborne particles, which is inhaled through the mouth and nose. It is a variable for assessing possible health hazards at the workplace and depends, among other things, on the speed and direction of air movement and the speed of inhalation. By convention, standard EN 481 stipulates that sampling of the inhalable fraction of the relationship

where E 1 is the percentage of suspended solids with aerodynamic diameter D (expressed in micrometers) that are to be collected.

To determine the thoracic and respirable fraction knowledge of the respirable fraction is necessary.

With reference to the DIN EN 481 standard, the inhalable fraction is referred to as " E-dust " or "inhalable dust fraction" in various technical rules for hazardous substances ( TRGS ) . The term "E-dust" is also used - together with the term "E-dust fraction" - in the DIN 33897 Part 1 standard as a synonym for "inhalable fraction".
