( Gray , 1867)

The single-colored squirrel ( Callosciurus inornatus ) is a species of squirrel from the genus of the real squirrel ( Callosciurus ). It occurs in the province of Yunnan in the south of the People's Republic of China as well as in Laos and Vietnam .

features

The monochrome beautiful squirrel reaches a head-torso length of about 21 to 29 centimeters and a weight of about 325 grams. The tail reaches a length of about 17 to 21 centimeters and is thus shorter than the rest of the body. The back color of the animals is agouti with two or three stripes of lighter, olive brown hair. The belly color is light purple-gray to blue-gray from the chin to the abdomen. The ears and feet and the top of the tail are the same color as the back, the tip of the tail is often black.

Compared to the sympatric subspecies of the Pallas squirrel ( C. erythraeus hendeei ) it is somewhat smaller, and the coloration differs somewhat.

distribution

The single-colored squirrel occurs in the province of Yunnan in the south of the People's Republic of China as well as in Laos and Vietnam .

Way of life

The Monochrome callosciurinae as all other species of the genus primarily arboreal ( arboricol ). It occurs in different habitats, especially in rainforests, shrubbery and also secondary forests . Like all other species of the genus, this species feeds primarily on plants.

Systematics

The single-colored beautiful squirrel is classified as an independent species within the genus of the real beautiful squirrel ( Callosciurus ), which consists of 15 species. The first scientific description comes from John Edward Gray from 1867, who described the species using individuals from the highlands of Laos. The species was a subspecies of Pallas squirrel ( Callosciurus erythraeus also of) and Irrawaddy croissant ( Callosciurus pygerythrus ) is considered. However, the single-colored beautiful squirrel is probably more closely related to the gray-bellied squirrel ( Callosciurus caniceps ). The range of these two squirrel species is separated from each other by the Mekong.

Apart from the nominate form, no further subspecies are distinguished within the species .

Status, threat and protection

The single-colored squirrel is classified as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) due to its large distribution area and its assumed frequent occurrence . The species is also adaptable to changes in its habitat, and no significant population decline can be observed. Potential population threats to the species are unknown. Some of the animals are hunted in Laos, but there is no evidence of a threat from the hunt. Habitat changes are unlikely to pose a threat as the species will benefit from these changes.
