The Markit / BME Purchasing Managers Index (EMI) has been a monthly indicator of economic development in Germany that has been published since 1996. The economic barometer is created by Markit Economics and the Federal Association of Materials Management, Purchasing and Logistics (BME). The EMI is based on the US Purchasing Managers Index (PMI).

The EMI is an overall index that provides a general overview of the economic situation in the industry. It is not only an important indicator for manufacturing, but also for the economy as a whole. The EMI is derived from a total of eleven sub-indices that reflect the respective change over the previous month. A quotation of the EMI below the reference line of 50 indicates that business in the industry has shrunk compared to the previous month, values above 50 indicate growth. A value of 50 means no change compared to the previous month. The greater the deviation from the reference line, the greater the change. The basis of the EMI is the questioning of a relevant selection of purchasing managers about the development of parameters such as

  • Incoming orders
  • Incoming orders export
  • Order backlog
  • Purchase quantity
  • Purchase prices / sales prices
  • Number of employees u. a. m.

EMI and PMI, like the consumer climate index or the price of crude oil, belong to the group of indicators, the development of which has a noticeable influence on the stock indices .
