The Federal Association of Materials Management, Purchasing and Logistics e. V. , founded in 1954, is a network partner for all industries and sectors and has 9,750 individual and corporate members (as of December 31, 2018). The aim of the association is to promote the exchange of experiences for companies and science, for the procurement and for the supplier side. The association is open to all branches and types of company. Horst Wiedmann ( ZF Friedrichshafen AG ) has been chairman of the federal executive board since 2013 . Dr. Silvius Grobosch has been General Manager of the BME since February 1, 2018.

Services

The association publishes the IHS Markit / BME purchasing managers' index, an early indicator for economic development in Germany, once a month. The association provides information about current price developments on national and international markets, topics of purchasing and logistics-specific relevance and about developments on the labor market, including salary developments, in publications and benchmarks . The BME publishes the specialist magazine "BIP - Best in Procurement" for managers from purchasing and logistics six times a year. The association also offers members advice and support. a. in the areas of purchasing law, commercial and contract law and in the personnel and careers sectors.

The association maintains contacts with federal, state, local authorities, universities and technical colleges. As part of a funding initiative by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology , the association has implemented a project to optimize public procurement processes together with partners from the public sector . In addition, the BME and the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich carried out a benchmark to measure the efficiency of public clients. The Competence Center for Innovative Procurement is being set up and managed by the BME on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The aim of the competence center is to strengthen the innovation orientation of public procurement in Germany in order to give important impulses for innovations in the economy.

International appearance

The association is organized internationally in the International Federation of Purchasing and Supply Management (IFPSM). The IFPSM has around 45 purchasing organizations around the world. The association has been increasingly involved in the Asian region since 2006. The BME organizes meetings of German buyers and Chinese suppliers in Beijing and Shanghai. Once a year, the BME and companies from Germany take part in the International Sourcing Fair in Shanghai.

  • The BME has been honoring successful purchasing and logistics management with the BME Innovation Prize since 1986 . Innovative services and concepts that permanently increase the efficiency of purchasing and logistics are awarded. The innovation award (formerly the German Materials Management Award) will be presented at the BME Symposium in Berlin.
  • The BME Science Award honors post- doctoral theses and dissertations that represent a high-quality achievement in the field of materials management, purchasing and logistics.
  • The BME University Prize honors outstanding university work in the field of purchasing .
  • Since 2012, the BME has recognized innovative achievements by user companies in the field of electronic procurement with the "Excellence in eSolutions" award.
  • Exemplary achievements by public clients in the procurement of innovative products, processes and services, as well as the design of innovative procurement processes, are awarded the BMWi / BME Prize for Innovation Creates Advantage.
