One-man bunker Wesseling

The one-man bunker Wesseling is located in Wesseling , North Rhine-Westphalia , in the Rheinpark on the towpath.

The bunker, also known as the splinter protection cell (SSZ), observation bunker, fire guard house or post office, is only a few meters from the Rhine on the bank. The concrete cone, built in 1942, offered people protection from shrapnel and bombs during the Second World War .

In Wesseling there were several of these probably smallest bunkers in the world. Only this one is still there and was entered as a memorial on January 9, 2014 under No. 110 in the list of architectural monuments in Wesseling .

There is an information plaque in front of the monument. Your text: This small bunker served as temporary protection in the event of surprise attacks during World War II. As a makeshift shelter, it was a refuge for the boatmen at this point. Cast from concrete and firmly anchored on a concrete slab, it held the shocks and air pressure from impacting bombs instead of [sic!]. The heavy door secured the entry hatch and the viewing slits allowed observation of the dangerous situation.
