Entry-level qualification ( EQ ; formerly entry-level qualification for young people , EQJ) is a measure for professional orientation by the employment agency .

The aim is to training seekers the opportunity to offer young people, through a 6- to 12-month long internship to test in a training company for the recognized occupation and to prove it. In parallel to the company work, the intern also takes part in lessons at the vocational school. In this way, the intern should be taught the content of the first year of training during the internship. If the intern and the company are satisfied with the cooperation, a training contract can be agreed after the EQ . The responsible chamber can then credit the time of the internship in order to start the second year of the apprenticeship straight away. At the request of the company, the Employment Agency promotes participation in this vocational orientation measure financially (but not to be confused with the vocational training allowance ) and with a social security allowance.

The advantages are that the applicant can prove himself in the company before signing the training contract, so the company avoids an unsafe and time-consuming recruitment process. In addition, the intern gets to know the requirements in the company and school at an early stage, which reduces the risk of dropping out of training. A possible disadvantage is that a company may not be seriously interested in taking on apprenticeships, but rather speculates on having a cheap workforce who is then dismissed before the conclusion of the apprenticeship contract or during the probationary period. According to the Federal Ministry of Labor, more than 50 percent of young people began vocational training in the 2009/2010 EQ program year following their entry-level qualification. This makes it one of the most successful offers to place young people in an apprenticeship. The costs and bureaucratic effort are comparably low and only a few steps are required for those involved.
