The soaking describes a process in which an object is placed in a liquid to produce a change in consistency cause. This is intended to soften the substance of the object or adhering matter and make it accessible for processing.

Examples:

  • Foods such as dried legumes often need to be soaked in order to process them or to make them palatable.
  • Rattan and rattan cane are soaked before processing to make them soft and elastic.
  • Soiled textiles or cookware are often easier to clean if they have been soaked in water or soapy water before the actual cleaning process .
  • Activation of enzymes and metabolic processes in seeds before eating or processing, see also malt
