Population development of Zittau
This article shows the population development of the city of Zittau in tabular and graphical form.
historical development
With industrialization, the population rose sharply. After the First World War there was a decline, which from the mid-1940s onwards was compensated by the refugees from the eastern regions. As a result, the population of Zittau reached its historic high of around 47,000 in 1950. Since then the population has been decreasing continuously. This trend continues even after the fall of the Wall in the GDR due to high unemployment and the decline in the birth rate. On December 31, 2006, the " official population " for Zittau was 24,984 according to the state statistical office of the Free State of Saxony (only main residences and after comparison with the other state offices). A further decline in the population to only 22,000 people by 2025 is expected.
The following overview shows the number of inhabitants according to the respective territorial status. Until 1820 it is an estimate, then census results or official updates of the city administration (until 1944), the state central administration for statistics (1945 to 1989) and the state statistical office (from 1990). From 1871, the information relates to the “local population”, from 1925 to the resident population and since 1966 to the “population at the place of the main residence”. Before 1871, the number of inhabitants was determined according to inconsistent survey procedures.
