history

The history of the repair shop had a major impact on the development history of the Cologne district of Nippes. From 1855 the Rheinische Eisenbahngesellschaft (in 1839 it opened the connection between Cologne and Aachen ) relocated its repair shop from the banks of the Rhine (on the Thürmchen) to Nippes. The plant shaped the district for almost 150 years. Up to 3,000 people worked here. From the end of the 1980s, a lively social and cultural life developed on the site for a while: the company for professional and social integration “Zug um Zug”, the cultural enterprise “Die Kantine” and numerous artist studios.

Today's development

Since the decision of the district parliament in 2003 not to use the area as a mixed area (work and residential area), the area of ​​the railway district has increasingly been transformed into a new district with many residential buildings, a central district park and (in some cases still planned) leisure facilities. Some of the residential projects house some of the most modern apartments in Cologne-Nippes. Exemplary residential projects (in alphabetical order) are:
