The Takao Railway Museum ( Chinese  打狗 鐵道 故事 館 , Pinyin Dǎgǒu Tiědào Gùshìguǎn ) is a railway museum in the Gushan District, Kaohsiung . It was formerly a railway station , the Kaohsiung Harbor said. The station was closed in 2008. After a renovation, the Railway Museum was opened there in 2010. It is operated by the Taiwan Railroad Cultural Association .

history

Kaohsiung Port was the first train station in Kaohsiung and the first in southern Taiwan. From 1900 to 1920 he was a locomotive shed , the Takao station called (Takao was the then name of the present city of Kaohsiung). On September 1, 1920, the station name was changed to Kaoshiung Station . In 1941, due to urban planning, passenger traffic was moved from Kaohsiung Station to a new train station. But the freight traffic still stayed in the Kaohsiung station. In the same year, the station name was changed to Kaohsiung Port. Until 2008, it was the largest freight station in Taiwan. Kaohsiung Port was closed on November 11, 2008.

Freight traffic in the port gradually declined due to the increase in road freight traffic and the relocation of heavy industry. From the year 2000, a series of urban planning measures (e.g. the construction of new bike paths, the construction of the MRT underground ) threatened to destroy this historic station. The Taiwan Railroad Cultural Association recognized the problem and negotiated with the city government about how to preserve the old station. The station has been a listed building since 2003 and the cultural association has received project funds to convert it into a museum. On October 24, 2010, Kaohsiung Port was opened as a Railway Museum under the name "Takao Railway Museum".

Exhibits and exhibition

Steam locomotives CT251 and DT609

The Railway Museum holds significant objects and cultural treasures from Taiwanese railway history. The decoration and interior of the museum is from the 1960s to 1970s, the heyday of Taiwanese freight transport by rail. In addition to the exhibition room, there is also a material room in which many documents, writings on the railway and the Railway Official Gazette from 1951 to the present day are on display. One or two lectures on the subject of railway culture take place in the museum every month. The outdoor area includes two steam locomotives , wagons, freight cars and a Kuo-Kuang bus. The station, a platform and a signal station are located on the premises.

The museum relies on the support of volunteers when it comes to repairing steam locomotives or managing the collection. In the future, the Takao Railway Museum will develop into a larger museum for rail freight transport.
