Thessaloniki Railway Museum
The Railway Museum in Thessaloniki documents the history of rail transport in Northern Greece .
history
The site was used as a military station until 1977 and was then converted into an OSE construction yard . The main building designed by Pierro Arigoni and built between 1891 and 1894 remained unused. After the railway museum in Athens could no longer be expanded and there was an association of railway friends in Thessaloniki, it was decided to open a second railway museum, which is publicly subsidized but privately operated. In 2001 the new museum was opened.
Exhibits
The two main exhibits are the small main building, which has been restored to its original state and shows a typical train station from the late 19th century, and a dining car of the Orient Express . A curiosity is an armchair owned by Eleftherios Venizelos .
