Railway accident on Lake Ashtamudi
In the railway accident on Lake Ashtamudi on July 8, 1988 , a train derailed on a bridge over Lake Ashtamudi , Kerala , India . 10 wagons crashed into the lake, 107 people died.
Starting position
The " Island Express " operated as an express train of the Southern Railway between Bangalore and Kanyakumari . He also used the Kollam – Ernakulam railway line . Between the stations of Kollam and Karunagappalli , the route crosses an extensive bay of Lake Ashtamudi over the Peruman Bridge . On July 8, 1988, a tornado raged in the area.
the accident
The course of the accident remained controversial. What is certain is that the train derailed around 1:15 p.m. and 10 wagons fell into the lake. The cause of the accident was officially stated to be that the tornado had thrown the train off the tracks . However, it remained unclear whether the train derailed and partially crashed, destroying the bridge or whether the bridge collapsed under the train and the train derailed as a result.
consequences
107 people died and another 200 were seriously injured. The bridge was then destroyed. A new railway bridge was built. The old one was left in situ as a memorial to the accident .
