Railway accident on the Bloukrans Bridge

The railway accident on the Bloukrans Bridge (Blaauwkrantz Bridge) occurred on April 22, 1911 in South Africa when parts of a mixed train crashed. 30 people died.

The train was on the route of the Kowie-Railway from Port Alfred to Grahamstown . The route crosses the Bloukrans , a tributary of the Kowie , on a 75 meter high bridge. Both the track superstructure and the vehicles were in a neglected condition. The locomotive was first followed by the freight cars , and the passenger cars at the end of the train. Shortly before the bridge, the train derailed . While the locomotive and freight car were still passing the far end of the bridge, four passenger cars and one company car fell into the depths.

consequences

30 people died. The accident investigation determined the neglected condition of the railway. Their manager has been prosecuted for negligent homicide .
