Railway accident in the Bronx

In the railway accident in the Bronx derailed three days after introduction of the February 16, 1907, electric traction , one of two electric locomotives pulled express the New York Central Railroad in the Bronx , New York City , USA . 23 people died.

Accident

The train was faster than the trains that had previously been pulled by steam locomotives . The accident occurred on a banked curve near 205th Street. The cant was sufficient for the speed driven. However, the superstructure was not designed for the centrifugal force that was now occurring : the track bedding shifted so that all vehicles derailed from the second car on the train.

consequences

23 people died. After 321 people were killed in railroad accidents in the USA in the previous year alone , the authorities demanded a systematic and detailed investigation of such accidents with immediate effect. The concrete recommendation from this accident was that on routes on which electric locomotives operated in double traction , “more rail nails would be desirable”.
