Ishwardi railway accident

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Ishwardi railway accident on March 22, 1983, a bridge in the Ishwardi district ( Upazila ) , Bangladesh , collapsed under a train passing over it. At least 60 people died.

the accident

On the girder bridge , the railway line crossed a largely dry river bed at a height of 23 meters. When the train crossed the bridge, the girders of the bridge slipped in the direction of travel, lost their grip on their supports on the pillars and crashed with their rear ends. They pulled the train down with them.

The damage profile allows the conclusion that insufficient monitoring of the structure with regard to its operational safety was the main reason for the accident. Moving the girders of the bridge in the direction of travel suggests that the force required for this was probably due to the train braking.

consequences

At least 60 people died.
