Istanbul Railway Accident (1957)
The railway accident in Istanbul was a head-on collision between a Simplon-Orient-Express traveling westwards and a local train after the express train left Istanbul on October 20, 1957.
the accident
The railway line İstanbul Sirkeci – Swilengrad is single-track . The Simplon Orient Express had left Istanbul Sirkeci station and was on its way to Paris . The Simplon-Orient-Express and an oncoming local train that ran between Yarımburgaz and İspartakule collided head-on at around 10.45 p.m. between the Istanbul suburban train stations Yarımburgaz ( route km 30.8) and İspartakule (km 38.2). The first three passenger cars of the local train were smashed; 95 people died in them and another 150 were injured.
Cause of accident
The cause of the accident was a dispatcher error , since both trains were allowed to enter the single-track section at the same time .
