from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Sulfur Springs rail accident on August 5, 1922 near Sulfur Springs , Missouri , USA , an express train hit a stationary passenger train . 34 people died.

Starting position

A passenger train running with considerable delay was on a route on the Missouri Pacific Railroad (MP). This was secured with a route block. The passenger train was followed by an express train. When the passenger train stopped at Riverside station , it was given the task of continuing to Wickers . 6 km outside of Riverside was a water crane that the train stopped at so the steam locomotive could refill water.

the accident

The locomotive driver of the following express train ran over two main signals showing "Halt" and a distant signal indicating "Attention" . Even when the stationary passenger train became visible 270 m in front of him, he did not brake, but collided with the stationary train at full speed.

consequences

34 people died: 32 who had been in the last two cars of the passenger train, a random passer-by who was just crossing the tracks "black" and the engine driver of the express train. Therefore, in retrospect, it was no longer possible to clarify why he had not seen the signals and the train standing in front of him. In addition, 175 people were injured.
