Viana de Cega railway accident

In the railway accident in Viana de Cega (Spain) on September 11, 1873, an express train derailed in a bridge departure. 21 people were killed.

Starting position

The Expresso del Norte , train no. 11, was on its way from the Spanish border station Irun on the French - Spanish border to Madrid . The train's 17 carriages were pulled by two steam locomotives. He was traveling on the Madrid – Valladolid railway line , which crossed the Douro on a truss bridge at Viana de Cega .

the accident

The bridge had sunk at the end facing away from Valladolid , so that the train derailed as it drove off the bridge. According to another representation, he is said to have been traveling at excessive speed. The rear part of the train pressed the front part together, and many of the cars, all with wooden structures, were shattered by the kinetic energy . Part of the train fell off the bridge. Only the last four cars on the train remained largely undamaged.

consequences

21 people were killed in the accident , including locomotive drivers , stokers , train drivers and some brakemen . 58 others were injured. An aid train was dispatched from Valladolid.

Calderón Collantes , later, 1879–1882, President of the Spanish Supreme Court ( Tribunal Supremo de España ), traveled by train and survived the accident.
