Iron-free ship

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Iron-free ships are special ships for military purposes or special research tasks that do not require a ship's own magnetic field.

Materials such as wood , rigid polymeric plastics or non-ferrous alloys such as light metals or anti-magnetic alloys are possible. It should be noted that the interior of iron-free ships must also largely consist of non-ferrous materials. One of the most famous iron-free ships is the anti-magnetic Soviet research ship Zarya .

In the navy , minesweepers are usually iron-free in order not to unintentionally trigger the ignition mechanism of magnetic mines .
