The Ilmenau ice rink is an ice rink operated by the city of Ilmenau in Thuringia . It is located in the city center at Ilmenau train station on the former location of the train station hotel and a glassworks.

history

Shell construction in February 2007

At a city council meeting on May 12, 2005, it was decided to build an ice rink in Ilmenau. Before that, there had been a mobile ice rink since 2000, which was set up as a tent with an ice surface of 25 by 25 meters in winter and was very popular with the population. In the course of this, students from the TU Ilmenau also founded an ice hockey club , reviving a tradition from the imperial era.

Construction on the ice rink began in March 2006, after the soil contaminated by contaminated sites had already been rehabilitated at the end of 2005. Construction work was completed in the summer of 2007 and the hall was inaugurated on October 20, 2007. The construction costs amounted to around 5.2 million euros. The executive architect was Norbert Ruge from Ilmenau. He designed the roof of the hall in the traditional style based on the city's glassworks, one of which was on the site of today's ice rink. The façade slate also takes up typical architecture of the region.

The ice rink has a grandstand and a VIP area. Standing places are available on the boards around the ice rink and on a small grandstand on the long side of the ice rink. Overall, the ice rink offers space for around 1200 spectators. The ice surface is 60 meters long and 30 meters wide.

Use of the hall

In the winter season, the ice rink is regularly open to the public for ice skating. In addition, the hall is used by various sports clubs for training and competitions. It serves the Kickelhahn Rangers as a venue and is occasionally used by the Black Dragons Erfurt . The Kickelhahn Rangers currently play in the Thuringian League. In addition, other Ilmenau clubs practice figure skating, curling and ice stock sport.

In the summer months the hall is used for various events, such as the Ilmenau Guggenmusik Spektakel, which took place for the third time in 2012.
