An ice scraper (also: Eisschaber ) is a tool for removing ice on smooth surfaces.

to form

In its most famous form, the ice scraper consists of a handle that merges into a blade that is perpendicular to it. In today's ice scrapers, the blade itself is usually only smooth on one side, while the other side has a profile made up of sharp teeth.

Nowadays, ice scrapers are almost always made of plastic and are primarily used for de-icing vehicle windows. For this purpose in particular, versions with a glove that surrounds the handle have been developed, which make the work of ice scraping more pleasant by keeping dissolved ice particles away from the surface of the hand.

As an inexpensive but frequently required vehicle tool, the ice scraper is a popular medium for advertising imprints. There are also parking discs with integrated ice scrapers.

application

The sharp-pointed side is used to break up frequently occurring thick layers of ice or the pretreatment of thin but solid ice layers. To do this, the ice scraper is guided horizontally from the sides to the center of the pane. The treated ice is then loosened from the surface with the smooth side of the blade and removed.

Legal

According to § 23 StVO , every driver in Germany has u. a. to ensure that his view is not impaired by the condition of the vehicle. This also includes removing ice from all vehicle windows. It is not enough to just scratch a "window" into the ice.
