Nikolaus von Banz (also: Nicolaus von Banz ; * in Breslau ; † September 1, 1344 ) was the administrator of Breslau .

Life

Nikolaus von Banz came from the Wroclaw patrician family Banz and is documented for the first time in 1305 as Canon of Wroclaw. From 1308 to 1315 he was archdeacon of Liegnitz and from 1326 until his death prelate at the Breslauer Kreuzstift . Due to the extraordinary vacancy that occurred after the death of Bishop Heinrich von Würben in 1319 through the subsequent double election of the candidates Vitus von Habdank and Lutold von Kremsier , Nikolaus von Banz exercised the diocesan administration as administrator until their resignation in 1326.

From around 1325 he was court judge and confidante of the Breslau Duke Heinrich VI. , where he also supported him in his efforts to annex Silesia to Bohemia and took the duke in protection from his brother Boleslaus . That is why Nikolaus von Banz was captured by Boleslaus' supporters at the end of 1326 and taken to Jeltsch Castle . After Henry's submission to Bohemia in April 1327, he was liberated.

Even during the reign of Bishop Nanker , Nikolaus von Banz exercised a strong ecclesiastical and political influence. He mediated the conflict between Nanker and the Bohemian King John and, through clever negotiations, rejected the papal legates Peter von Auvergne and Galhard de Garceribus' money claims for the St. Peter's penny .

In 1321 Nikolaus von Banz donated Gut Kosel to the Breslau cathedral church and one year later acquired Gut Klettendorf . Half of Kaltenstein Castle is also said to have belonged to him.
