Ice surcharge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ice surcharge in liner shipping denotes a percentage surcharge that is levied on the sea freight according to the tariff to compensate for the difficult transport conditions and the additional risk of ice in the fairway.

In the Baltic Sea ports, ice surcharges are charged between November and April / May. They are differentiated from icebreaker fees that are charged for keeping the fairway clear. Ice breaker fees are borne by the ship, ice surcharges are borne by the cargo.
