El Biar
El Biar ( Arabic الأبيار, DMG al-Abyār 'the sources') is a suburb of Algiers , the capital of Algeria . It is located in the Bouzaréah administrative unit in the province of Algiers . According to the 2005 census, it has a population of 93,012.
history
El Biar was an upscale suburb of Algiers during the Algerian War. There was the Villa des Tourelles, a notorious torture center of the French army. The French mathematician Maurice Audin was tortured and murdered here. French journalist Henri Alleg survived torture and imprisonment. He described the atrocities in his work La Question .
