El Haggounia (also El Hagounia or Hagounia ) is a place in the north of Western Sahara in the Democratic Arab Republic of Sahara, which was proclaimed by the Polisario . It is about 25 minutes south of the border with Morocco. Like much of the Western Sahara, El Haggounia is occupied by Morocco .

The place, located near the border with Morocco, has 1089 inhabitants (2004) and belongs to the province of Laâyoune .

The place gained international attention when on the night of November 6th to 7th, 1975, a march of the Green March with 100,000 participants from Morocco crossed the border and set up a camp north of El Haggounia. With the march, Morocco pursued the goal of annexing the then Spanish Sahara to Morocco. On November 10, 1975, the march participants withdrew to Morocco. However, Spain handed over the Western Sahara and El Haggounia to Morocco a short time later.
