El Porvenir (Panama)

El Porvenir is the capital of the Panamanian comarca (autonomous area) Guna Yala and has only about ten inhabitants. The name is Spanish and means "future" when translated. In the Kuna language the place is called Gaigirgordup .
El Porvenir is located on an island of the same name in the San Blas Islands ( Gaigirgordup in the Kuna language ) and is the administrative seat of Kuna Yala. It has an airfield, a small hotel and a few buildings that are inhabited by a few families. Flights between Panama City and El Porvenir operate weekly. El Porvenir is a starting point for visits to the territory of the Kuna .
