City scales (Elberfeld)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Elberfelder Stadtwaage , which has been in use since 1606, was one of the most important public institutions in the early city of Elberfeld . The rulers of the time determined a place on the old Elberfeld market square for the construction of the city scales . The location of the no longer preserved building is on today's Alte Freiheit street at the confluence with Poststraße and Turmhof street .

In the years 1824/25 the building was replaced by a new building and existed at least until 1852. The four-story house formed an irregular square. The main facade of the house was made of stone , the remaining walls of rubble stones. The foundations were set up five feet (around 1.56 meters) deep. The ground floor was 13 feet (approximately 4.08 meters) high and the floor area was 874 square feet (approximately 274.3 square meters). The construction of the building cost 5,497 Thaler at that time.

The upper rooms were leased to the institution of justice as a women's detention center. Other rooms, as far as they were not needed for the operation of the city scales, were used for the storage of goods and goods for a lease.

Court hearings and magistrate meetings were also held in the building, which is why the city scales can be described as the predecessor of the first Elberfeld town hall.
