Electronic payment advice

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Electronic Payment Advice (abbreviation: EPA ), also known as the electronic sales file, is a file with detailed payment information that simplifies financial accounting for payments with credit cards. It is a standard data format used by credit card acquirers , including Visa , Mastercard , CUP , JCB , American Express and Diners Club .

The format

EPA files contain data in ASCII format, but are not CSV files. They can be displayed in a text editor but cannot be represented meaningfully, so the data format cannot be easily processed. The accounting system must have a corresponding import routine in order to be able to read in an EPA file.

The level of detail of the file can be set on output. It can contain collections (captures) as well as chargebacks and credits (refunds), comparable to a bank account statement.

criticism

EPA files often contain unencrypted credit card information that can be read with any text editor. An import module must be certified according to the " Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard " (PCI DSS) in order to be able to process it officially.
