Japan Credit Bureau , or JCB for short ( Japanese : 株式会社 ジ ェ ー シ ー ビ ー), is a Japanese credit card organization based in Tokyo .

Companies

JCB was founded in 1961, and in 1972 the one millionth card was issued. At first, JCB was only represented in Japan; in 1981, the first foreign branch was opened in Hong Kong . After a bank reform law in 1982 allowed Japanese banks to issue credit cards themselves (until then they had to set up their own subsidiaries that were not allowed to be banks), JCB began to issue its cards through franchising partners. In the previous year , the decision was made deliberately against a cooperation with the industry giants VISA and Mastercard , which in retrospect also proved to be correct, as all other Japanese providers of their own credit cards over time were incorporated into these as part of cooperations and only as Brands lead a niche existence.

JCB cards are accepted by around eleven million points of sale in 189 countries. Regional focuses are the Asian countries Japan , Korea , China , Taiwan , Thailand and Singapore as well as the US-American area. In Europe, JCB cards have so far mostly only been accepted in international hotels, with providers of high-priced luxury goods and in places that are frequently visited by Japanese tourists. In autumn 2011, however , Die Deutsche Kreditwirtschaft announced that it would in future also be selling its product in connection with girocard in Germany as part of a cooperation with JCB . Such a card was first presented on March 31, 2016. A corresponding card works as a girocard within Germany and as a JCB card in other countries. The product is called “Co-Badged Card” at JCB.
